Friday has a chance to see a few flurries through the afternoon but very little to no accumulation is expected. Temperatures will get above average and we may see times of sunshine. Saturday is similar, but dry and a few degrees cooler with highs in the low 20's.
A WINTER STORM WATCH has been issued for Buffalo, Clark, Eau Claire, Jackson, Pepin and Trempealeau county from 6 am to 6 pm Sunday February 9th, 2020.
Timing: The snowfall will likely start in the very early morning hours Sunday. The heaviest of snow will fall between 5 am and 12 pm Sunday morning.
Totals: The 48-hour snowfall forecast calls for a very tight gradient between high amounts and low amounts. From Eau Claire to La Crosse, we could see anywhere from 2'' to 6'' with a band of 8'' or more somewhere in between. While further north, snowfall will range from 1'' to 4'' depending on the track of this system.
Winds: Winds will be light Sunday and vary from south to north. No strong wind gusts are expected with this system.
Visibility: Visibility will be very low in the heaviest snow. Less than 1/2 mile of visibility with near white out conditions will be likely Sunday morning.
Travel impacts: Snow covered roads, heavy snowfall rates, and low visibility are the main threats. Blowing and drifting is NOT a concern due to light winds. Travel time will be greatly extended and travel is not advised through the areas that will likely be upgraded to a winter storm warning later this weekend.
Forecast beyond this system: Beyond Sunday the weather goes stagnant again until another system heads across the Central Plains next Wednesday. Depending on that track, we could see more snow, but as of now it looks more likely that we'll see temperatures sink back into the arctic air.
