Gift ideas for people who like to travel: Fenton’s favorites - pennlive.com

We’re down to the wire now and if you still haven’t decided what to get your family or that special someone for the holidays, how about the gift of travel?

Statistics prove we would rather see and explore the world while creating lifelong memories and new experiences with the people who matter most to us. No matter the income level, we all want a good value for our well-deserved vacation dollar.

There is a huge uptick with baby boomers choosing to give their children and grandchildren the gift of travel. Plus, with the growing popularity of DNA testing, many families want to know more about their ancestors and where they come from.

Whether you choose a relaxing, nearby getaway, a family cruise, or an all-inclusive tropical island vacation, be sure to talk to a trusted travel expert and ask about any the sales and promotions going on right now.

Here are a few of my favorite (and convenient) drive-to getaway promotions going on right now:

In our own backyard, the legendary Hotel Hershey offers a “Christmas Candylane Package” and a “Breakfast (or lunch) with Santa” overnight stay. Participants can enjoy a festive dinner in the Circular Dining Room followed by a performance of “The Nutcracker” at the Hershey Theater (Dec. 21-22).

Just down the road in Lancaster County, there are “Couple Pampering Packages” at The Inn and Suites at Leola Village, a sumptuous, AAA five-diamond fine dining experience, featuring a “Celebrate Overnight Package”. Be sure to ask about the winter specials at their Destinations Spa. Take in “The Joy to the World Show” at the American Music Theater now through Dec. 30th and be sure to take the family to the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania. Considered one of the top railroad museums in the world, holiday special events are going on now.

The Pocono Mountains offer terrific winter sports getaway packages at the family-friendly, historic and affordable Shawnee Inn -- check out the “Ski & Stay” and “Winter Golf Lesson Packages”. Camelback Resort is a great destination for skiers of all levels and also boasts the largest snowtubing park in the U.S. For deeper pockets and to indulge mom, The Lodge at Woodloch in Hawley is an award-winning, full-service luxury spa. If it’s elegance, romance and award-winning dining with daily gourmet breakfasts, The French Manor Inn & Spa in the heart of the Pocono Mountains will not disappoint. For a bit of history at an authentic Arts & Crafts Lodge, get cozy in front of the decorated fireplace at The Settlers Inn, or check out the Ledges Hotel, a unique inn surrounded by waterfalls and snow-covered natural beauty.

The Inn at Bowman’s Hill is a private and elegant gated estate nestled in the countryside of beautiful Bucks County, minutes from the center of New Hope. Their signature breakfast, a traditional full English breakfast, is delicious.

Heading towards western Pa, book the “Sip, Stay and Save” and enjoy festive holiday cocktails at the gracious and historic Omni Bedford Springs resort in Bedford and be on the lookout for the 500-plus nutcrackers on display.

If it’s a bustling and cultural city break you’re looking for, the upscale French influenced www.sofitel.com in Philadelphia has “Magnifique Romance” and “Stay Longer & Save” packages. Smack in the center of downtown Pittsburgh, meanwhile, is the Omni William Penn. For one hundred years, the William Penn’s lobby (with its gigantic Christmas tree) has been the place to see and be seen. You never know who you may bump into at “The Speakeasy Social Club”, where you can make your own version of an “Old Fashion” cocktail.

If you don’t feel like driving and prefer to sit back and take in the scenery – you can easily take Amtrak from Harrisburg or Lancaster to Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. Or stretch out completely and indulge with a limousine from www.premierelimousine.com or www.uniquelimousine.com.

Splurge at the beautiful “Inn at Perry Cabin”. Located in St. Michaels along the Eastern Shore, Maryland. While there, take the time to explore the charming, historic seaport towns of Easton and Tilghman Island. Take the ferry to Oxford and have lunch at the oldest inn in America, The Robert Morris Inn. Co-owner and acclaimed Chef Mark Salter hosts very fun cooking demonstrations followed by delicious seafood lunches. Info: www.tourtalbot.org

There’s something special about being at the beach during the off-season, and “The Reeds at Shelter Haven” in Stone Harbor, N.J., is perfect for quiet weekends or a wellness-focused break at their new “Salt Spa” wellness center. Ask about all special winter rates and packages at this popular beach town.

A great match for baseball fans and families, look into a winter getaway to charming Cooperstown, N.Y., nicknamed “America’s Most Perfect Village” and home to the Baseball Hall of Fame. Stay in the heart of the village at the cozy “Cooper Inn” and check out the “Wonderful Winter Special” with rates starting at just $89 per night, a 30 percent discount.

You can explore the Pacific Northwest and the majestic Canadian Rockies via luxury rail aboard the highly acclaimed “Rocky Mountaineer”. The “Peak 3 Promotion” includes free hotel dinners, private transfers, and more, but it must be booked by Dec. 20.

If you want to travel with purpose and passion – and in comfort - with an escorted group , check out the current sales and promotions at www.luxurygold.com, www.tauck.com, www.insightvacations.com and www.trafalgar.com. All of these tour companies travel the world, offering in-depth cultural and culinary experiences – at various price points, depending on your interests, wants, needs and budget.

You can book all of the above getaways now to give on Christmas morning. January through March is also a great time to get the most for your money with special pricing and promotions.

Cruises are also on sale, especially Alaskan, Mexican, Caribbean, European and Asian itineraries. If you see something you like, don’t wait. Contact your trusted and experienced travel agent today. European river and ocean ships will sell out and many promotions end Dec. 31.

Tune into Sandy Fenton’s show, “Let’s Talk Travel with AAA” from 11am to noon Saturdays on WHP580. For more information, go to www.whp580.com and click on the link to “Let’s Talk Travel”.
