Rickie Lee Jones Loves The Vibes At Many Travel Destinations - Forbes

Traveling throughout the world as a performing artist, Rickie Lee Jones has come to love many cities. But one city — about a 13-hour flight from her Los Angeles stomping grounds — stands out like no other.

"Buenos Aires," says Jones, whose new album Kicks covers 1950s-1970s rock, pop and jazz songs. "I was only there once, but it had a big impact on me. I met a lot of women — gay women — and was so inspired by them I hired a female crew to run my web site down there. It's very unexpected to an American: the feeling of Buenos Aires and the bottom of the world."

Jones, who lived for many years in Southern California and now lives in New Orleans, says she also loves Boston, San Fransisco, Copenhagen and Paris.

"These cities have kept me working, supporting me with sold-out shows, and I think they are the most beautiful cities as well," she says. "Seattle, L.A., New York City — they are also cool. I love Sidney and Melbourne — I'd travel halfway 'round the world to play there! Melbourne is just one of those places that understands Rickie Lee Jones."

Two more cities come to mind that are dear — or maybe becoming dear — to her.

"I guess Jerusalem is a very special city to me," says the winner of two Grammy awards, one for Best New Artist in 1979 and one with Dr. John for Best Jazz Vocal Performance in 1989. "I love the sounds and that I walk on a road that countless people have walked on."

Jones, whose hit single "Chuck E.'s in Love" propelled her to international stardom in 1979, says she is just "getting to know" the District of Columbia, "though it is elusive." She says she played there many times but "could never get a sense of the place." Now, "I start to feel the good of it. Took a long time."

Generally, Jones says her favorite places are rooftops, oceans and locales with animals and trees.

"I come back to places I can go scuba diving or where I have had unusual encounters with animals," she says. "I like to watch birds, lizards, spiders and sharks. So I'm happy most anywhere. You can find a spider most anywhere."

Thinking about the many special places where she has traveled makes Jones philosophical about the people who live there.

"I am inspired that so many lives are being lived simultaneous to mine — and how whole lifetimes come and go — and none of us ever meets one another," she says. "Performers get the chance to touch so many lives — in both a physical way, shaking hands and talking, as well as the obvious musical connection."

After touring for so many years, though, what's it like today to continue to go to so many cities to promote the music of Rickie Lee Jones?

"Well, it feels like promoting the record instead of touring," she responds. "And that's an honest place to be. It used to just be the thrill of touring, even though I was obviously promoting my record. There was so much glory in the touring.

"Now, we're lucky if we do enough business to pay everybody and make a profit," she adds. "People don't realize how much it costs to do this. But I can't complain. I do what I love and have done for all my life. That is the big paycheck."
