Powerful Winter Storm to Significantly Impact Midwest Holiday Travel - WIFR

It's estimated that 55 million people are to take to the roadways in the coming days, with an additional 4.5 million to travel by air, according to AAA. Unfortunately, travel by land and air may be severely impacted by a dynamic and powerful winter storm set to sweep through the Midwest on Tuesday and Wednesday. While the Stateline won't be among the large swath of real estate set to receive more than six inches of snow, there are to be impacts here, and potentially significant ones at that.

Our Tuesday's to start out quietly, albeit on a cloudy note. By early to mid-afternoon, we're to expect light rainfall to commence, and likely to continue through early Tuesday Evening. A more energetic disturbance in the evening hours may be enough to generate some embedded rumbles of thunder and a few brief 40-50 MPH wind gusts before the rain rapidly moves out shortly after midnight.

On the cold side of the storm, snow is to be the primary mode of precipitation. Portions of eight states are already under Winter Storm Warnings as of Monday Evening, with an expansion northeastward to include much of Michigan's Upper Peninsula likely in the hours ahead. Those are areas where six inches or more of snowfall could fall Tuesday Night into Wednesday. Travel in and around those areas is emphatically discouraged during that time.

While the Stateline's to avoid snowfall of any consequence, aside from a few Wednesday Morning flurries, we'll be far from immune to travel trouble ourselves. Following the passage of a powerful cold front Wednesday Morning, winds will ramp up in a huge way. Sustained wind speeds of 30 to 40 MPH are to be expected for most, if not all of Wednesday, with gusts approaching 60 MPH possible. For that reason, a rare High Wind Watch has been issued for all of Northern Illinois Wednesday. These winds will cause significant travel problems, especially on North/South roadways, and may cause tree damage and localized power outages across a large swath of the Midwest.

It won't just be travel by land affected by the heavy snow and gusty winds. Significant air travel impacts are also expected at many Midwestern airports, including several hubs such as O'Hare and Minneapolis-St. Paul. Those with air travel plans are encouraged to check with their airline often to remain abreast of any potential delays or cancellations, as many are expected to occur Tuesday and Wednesday.

Much quieter travel conditions are expected throughout the Midwest on Thanksgiving Day.
